Why I’m Supporting Elizabeth Warren for President
When I first met Elizabeth Warren as a first year law student in contracts class at Harvard Law School in 1999, I was terrified. Razor-sharp, Professor Warren called on us in rapid succession, employing the Socratic method to probe our understanding of the minute details of the cases in last night’s reading, teasing out the inconsistencies in our reasoning, and slowly guiding us towards a greater understanding of the policy complexities underlying the legal norms we were studying.
Professor Warren’s brilliance and her passion for social justice were obvious even in the fall of 1999, as she refereed my friendly political sparring with more conservative classmates such as now-Senator Tom Cotton.
In the 21 years (!) since my 1L year in Prof. Warren’s class, it has been fascinating to watch her ascension from a remarkable law professor to one of the leading lights on the national political stage. For many years, Warren has been a relentless fighter for social justice, socioeconomic equality, and reclaiming our democracy.
During my time in the Obama White House and Commerce Department, I had the pleasure to cross paths with her and her team in Washington as she transformed her dream of an agency to stand up for consumer financial protection into a concrete and powerful reality in the form of the CFPB.
As the Democratic nominee for Massachusetts Lieutenant Governor in 2018, I had the great honor to be on the ballot with Senator Warren and to campaign alongside her in cities and towns across Massachusetts as she articulated her vision for progressive policies that will help us reverse the severe inequalities in our economy and begin to reclaim our democracy in a time when it is under devastating assault.
This presidential cycle, we have been fortunate that several experienced, visionary, progressive candidates have stepped forward to compete for the Democratic nomination. Whoever wins the nomination, I will campaign enthusiastically for the Democratic nominee. Any one the candidates for the Democratic nomination would be a dramatic improvement over our current disastrous president.
Tomorrow, when I go to my town hall to vote early in the presidential primary in Massachusetts, I will proudly cast my ballot for Elizabeth Warren.
I hope you will consider joining me in supporting Sen. Warren to be the next president of the United States, in an election that may well prove to be the most important of our lifetimes.
